How to Customise a Countdown

Open a Countdown

Tap any existing countdown in your list, then tap the Edit button (pencil icon) in the top right corner to open the customisation screen.

💡 You can also customise during the initial creation step

Choose Background Style

Select from three background modes: Gradient (two-colour blend), Solid (single accent colour), or Photo Frame (your own image from Camera Roll).

💡 Photo Frame requires Pro - gradients and solids are free

Pick Your Colours

For Gradient style, pick two colours from the colour wheel or preset palette. For Solid, choose one accent colour. See a live preview of your countdown as you adjust.

💡 Live preview updates instantly as you select colours

Select an Icon

Tap the emoji icon area and browse or search through 500+ emoji icons. Tap any emoji to set it as the countdown's icon. This icon also appears on your Home Screen widget.

💡 Search "birthday" or "travel" to quickly find relevant icons

Add a Tag Category

Assign a Tag to your countdown from categories like Birthday, Travel, Work, Health, Holiday, or create your own custom tag for smart organisation and filtering.

💡 Tags let you quickly view all countdowns of the same type

Save Your Design

Tap Save to apply your customisation. The countdown card in your list updates instantly with the new design - and if you have a widget, it also updates to reflect the new style.

SwiftUI Rendering Pipeline

All countdown card designs are rendered using SwiftUI's native drawing APIs. Gradients, colours, and photo frames are composited in real time - the preview updates instantly with zero lag as you adjust settings.

Photo Frame Processing

When you choose a photo from your Camera Roll as a background, Countdownn generates an optimised thumbnail version for widget use and applies a contrast overlay to ensure the countdown text remains legible regardless of photo content.

Widget Design Sync

Customisation data (colours, icon, style) is stored per countdown and automatically applied to any Home Screen, Lock Screen, or StandBy widget showing that countdown. Change the design once - all widgets update together.

Tag-Based Filtering

Tags are stored as metadata on each countdown. The main list can be filtered by tag with a single tap - showing only Work countdowns, only Birthdays, or any custom category you've created. Smart organisation at scale.

Customisation Questions

Can I use my own photos as countdown backgrounds for free? +

Photo Frame backgrounds (using your own Camera Roll photos) are a Pro feature. The free version includes full access to all gradient styles and solid colour options - which offer a huge range of beautiful designs without needing a subscription. Pro also unlocks premium gradient presets and additional visual styles.

Will my countdown widget also show the custom design I chose? +

Yes - widget designs automatically inherit the countdown's colour scheme and icon. When you customise a countdown with a purple gradient and a 🎂 icon, your Home Screen widget for that countdown will display the same colours and icon. You only need to customise once and all widget instances update automatically.

How many custom tags can I create? +

You can create unlimited custom tags in addition to the built-in categories (Birthday, Travel, Work, Health, Holiday, Education, etc.). Tags are fully editable - rename or delete them at any time. The main countdown list can be filtered by any single tag with a tap, making it easy to manage large collections of countdowns organised by category.
