Smart Albums in Gallery are automatically-generated photo collections that group your images by events, locations, people, and time - without any manual effort from you. As soon as you take new photos, they're automatically added to the right albums.

Unlike iOS Photos' basic album structure, Gallery's Smart Albums intelligently categorise your entire library - making it easy to find photos from any event, any place, or any time period instantly. Optimised to handle large photo libraries with 10,000+ photos while staying fast and smooth.

How to Use Smart Albums on iPhone

Getting started with Smart Photo Albums in Gallery is automatic - but here's how to make the most of them.

Open Gallery & Tap Albums

Open Gallery – Photo Locker. Tap the Albums tab in the bottom navigation. You'll immediately see auto-generated Smart Albums at the top.

Browse Smart Albums

Scroll through Smart Albums sorted by Events, Locations, or People. Each album shows a cover photo and photo count. Tap any album to view its contents.

Create a Custom Album

Tap the + button in the Albums view to create a custom album. Give it a name, then add photos by selecting them from your gallery or any Smart Album.

💡 Custom albums can be reordered by drag-and-drop

Add Photos to Albums

Browse any photo, tap the Share / More button and select Add to Album. A photo can exist in multiple albums without duplicating the file.

💡 Adding to an album doesn't copy the photo - saves storage

Search Within Albums

Inside any album, use the search bar to filter photos by date, filename, or type. For large albums with hundreds of photos, this makes finding specific images instant.

Share or Export Albums

To share an entire album, tap the Share Album button. Select all photos and share via AirDrop, Messages, or export as a ZIP or individual files.

Location-Based Grouping

Photos with GPS data are automatically grouped by location using reverse geocoding. Photos from the same city, neighbourhood, or landmark are clustered into location albums - even if taken years apart.

Event Detection by Time Clusters

Photos taken close together in time (within a few hours or a day) are grouped as Events. A burst of photos on a birthday, a day trip, or a holiday automatically becomes its own Smart Album.

There's no hard limit - Gallery creates as many Smart Albums as needed based on your photo library. Typically users with large libraries see dozens of location albums, several Events albums per month, and multiple People albums. Custom albums you create manually are also unlimited.

Does Gallery perform well with 10,000+ photos? +

Absolutely. Gallery is specifically optimised for large photo libraries. It uses virtual scrolling (only rendering photos currently on screen) and progressive thumbnail loading to ensure smooth, fast scrolling even with tens of thousands of images. Users regularly report smooth performance with 15,000–20,000 photo libraries.

Will Smart Albums update automatically as I take new photos? +

Yes. Smart Albums update in real time as new photos are added to your iPhone's photo library. If you take photos in a new location, a new location Smart Album will appear. Events update as photo timestamps cluster together. You never need to manually refresh or rebuild albums.

What happens to albums if I delete Gallery app? +

Custom albums you created in Gallery will be removed if you delete the app, as they're stored in the app's data. However, Smart Albums are regenerated automatically from your photo library data if you reinstall the app - so location and event groupings always reflect your actual photos. Your photos themselves are never deleted by removing the app.
